Arts and Culture at the heart of a Sustainable Community

At the recent Arts and Culture Roundtable sponsored by the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture, Hunter Morrison, Executive Director of the Northeast Ohio Sustainable Communities Consortium (NEOSCC) spoke passionately about the critical nature of arts as an essential component in a sustainable community.

Morrison described five key roles that arts and culture play in developing a vibrant, resilient and sustainable place:

  • Help to define and articulate the soul of our communities;
  • Connect the present with our shared past and future;
  • Draw people to central places, creating a critical mass of activity;
  • Help drive community economic development by creating jobs and new business opportunities; and
  • Celebrate diversity and advances equity and encourages community engagement in our communities.

These roles are critical whether working in the variety of unique places located throughout Northeast Ohio.  A region that is rich in arts and culture assets that are appreciated locally, nationally and internationally.

What is Vibrant NEO 2040?

It is the development of a regional visioning and decision-making framework.  The process will result in a shared vision and framework for the NEO future intended to inspire and guide actions and decisions on a regional and place-based basis.

The diverse and multitude of arts and culture resources in Northeast Ohio have a critical role to play in the development of Vibrant NEO 2040.  The role will include helping NEOSCC understand all of the regional assets through the 12 County footprint (Ashtabula , Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Summit, Stark, Trumbull and Wayne. ) The arts and culture community can also actively participate in the series of community workshops throughout the next 11 months that will shape the overall vision.  The networks provided by these organizations can also play the role of conduit to communities and residents to build excitement and involvement in the development of Vibrant NEO 2040.
